Do you like asmr?

Hello!!! This week I have a special treat! I prepared the interview with a Korean middle school student! Unfortunately, this assignment proved to be somewhat difficult due to the language barrier and my limited knowledge of the education system here in South Korea. Thankfully, I am in a club that pairs me up with a Korean "mentor" (it's Mentor's Club) and my mentor was able to help me get the interview questions answered and gain some knowledge about a South Korean middle school student's life! My mentor's name is Kim Sung-Gyeong and her best friend is a teacher. We went out for lunch together and I asked her if I could ask one of her students a few questions. I am a bit sad that she was not able to get a picture of our interviewee, but I think it is necessary to be understanding in situations like this. As a teacher, she may not have been comfortable asking, the student may not have been comfortable with getting her picture taken, and her parents may not approve if her picture were to be taken. I will make do with what I have. I hope you enjoy it! I found her answers to be very interesting! Ryoo Hae-won ~ Female ~ 12 years old ~ 7th Grade
1) Where do you live? What is your house/apartment like?
I live in an apartment in Euijungbu-si. Uijeongbu
2) Where do you go to school? I go to school at Chunbo Middle school. (www.chunbo.ms.kr) (Middle school in South Korea usually goes from 7th to 9th grade, and students enter at about 12 or 13 years old and graduate at 15 or 16 years old. I found the picture on Chunbo middle school's facebook page!)
La imagen puede contener: 5 personas, multitud e interior
Assembly in session at Chunbo Middle School.
3) Do you do any after school activities? Clubs? Or sports?
After school, I usually go to private academies to learn more. Right now I am attending math and art classes. (It is common for elementary, middle, and high school students to take additional classes outside of their required public education. Academics are very competitive in South Korea and parents prepare their children for college starting from a young age. They are trying to do their best as parents, but some people, especially from other cultures, may view this as extreme.)
4) What do you kids wear to school?
We wear a school uniform and gym clothes for physical education.
5) What do you do in your free time?
I like reading books and listening to the music.

6) What kind of music do you listen to? What books do you read? What do you watch on tv? Do you like kpop and anime? I like a k-pop! My favorite singer is Bolbbalgan4. I like reading fantasy novels. I enjoy entertainment shows like KBS's The Return of Superman. ("The Return of Superman" is a reality show featuring celebrities and their families. The men are left with their kids for 48 hours and are tasked with various activities assigned by their wives. The wives have 48 hours to enjoy time to themselves and relax. It is very well enjoyed by families in South Korea. Watch the one-minute clip below!)
7) What do you worry about and think about? Do you have plans for the future?
I worry about what I want to do in the future.
8) What is considered cool right now? What is trendy?
YouTube is really popular. I watch make-up tutorials, ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response: relaxation from sound), and slime-making videos.

This is Ryoo Hae-won's favorite YouTuber! YouTube videos of people eating is really popular in South Korea. This would be an example of ASMR as well. What do you think? Do you watch ASMR videos on YouTube?
9) What is your favorite food?
Tteokbokki. (her and her friends love this, especially sinjeon tteokbokki, which is just spicy rice cakes with cheese on top.)

10) What do you do when you spend time with friends?
I chat with my friends. End Those were the questions that I was able to get answered. I hope this gave you an inside look into the world of a middle school student in South Korea! From my perspective, she studies hard, enjoys socializing with friends at school, and watches YouTube, reads, and watches "The Return of Superman" in her spare time. What did you think? Do the students in South Korea study a lot? Is their food odd? Does the show sound interesting? Would you like it if you were required to wear a uniform to school (not including PE)? These are example questions so do not feel the need to answer word for word. Please give me your honest opinion! I look forward to reading your comments ~

I agree, I like wearing my own clothes too. It allows me to express myself!
I love Korean food! What I can eat, anyway. Since I do not eat meat, my favorite dishes are bibimbap, soft tofu stew, and jeon (Korean savory pancake). Have you had Korean food before?

    2. Hi Jovanni,
That sounds like a cool skill to have! I've always done well in my math classes, but never good enough to beat the calculator.
The Korean shows are funny! A lot of shows use cute animations and funny emojis to add humor. I think this is what makes a lot of shows appealing to South Korean audiences.

I see what you mean, Jovanni. I feel the same way. If I bought it, I want to be able to use/wear it. I'm not sure if schools profit off of uniform use, but I think it would be interesting to look into why South Korean schools enforce uniform policies.

  4. Hi my name is Jalane, I wouldn't like it if I were required to wear a school uniform because I personally like to be able to wear whatever I want. If you wear uniforms you can't really get creative with your clothes and that's boring. If I went to South Korea, I would want to see their resturants and cafe's to see if it's similar to America. If a 6th grader came to visit from South Korea, I would take them to the mall and take them to resturants to let the person try American food.

    1. Hello, Jalane!
I think it's great that you like to get creative with your clothing options. I was the same way in middle school.
The cafes and restaurants are definitely different. I love eating out here. It's so easy and convenient. You sit down, order, they bring side dishes, they bring your meal, you pay your meal, and leave. There's no tip or taxes added, which is great if you're visiting from abroad. A student from South Korea would really enjoy trying the different American restaurants. From what I have seen, they enjoy a lot of American foods like burgers and fried chicken so to get that in the USA would be a real treat.

I do not think there food is odd because its based on there culture and it might actually taste good. The show doesn't sound too interesting to me but i am pretty sure a lot of people like it. I would not like it if I was required to wear a uniform to school because i would want to wear the things that i like or enjoy wearing and the cloths might feel uncomfortable. If I went to South Korea i would want to see all the different kind of food. If a 6th grader came to visit me from South Korea I would ask them questions about how its different from South Korea to Oregon.

    1. Hello Jordan!
To me, it seems like they are very studious in South Korea as well. This show is one of the most popular in South Korea! You are right about that. The little girl in the video I showed is supposedly really famous!
The food is great! It took me a little bit to figure out what I liked, but I'm enjoying it as much as I can now since I'll be leaving soon. The food is a reflection of their culture. Good observation!
You know, I thought the same thing. How can the girls go through every day in a skirt? It seems like a hassle to me, but again, I think it has a lot to do with culture and tradition. Are there any questions you want to ask me about the differences between South Korea and Oregon?

I've never worn a uniform personally, but it doesn't seem like the school children find a problem with it. They could just be used to it though.

The food is a definite 10. So authentic and so yummy! It depends on your preferences though. Do you like spicy food? What about meat? If you like meat, you would LOVE South Korea food.

That's a really great question because South Korea loves dessert! They have dessert cafes that sell cake, macaroons, shave ice, and all kinds of pastries. I do eat mochi here! They have so many different kinds and it's all so gooood. I'll get a picture next time I come across a cute dessert café. Where would you say that mochi came from? Japan or South Korea?

Honey comb asmr? :o Like the cereal? That must have been really satisfying to watch! That was one of my favorite cereals growing up.

I think most people go out to eat Korean BBQ or friend chicken. There are a lot of places specifically for those two foods. I would compare Korean BBQ to carne asada (have you ever had that?). From what I've seen in dramas, the uniforms do look like a lot of work. You mentioned keeping them in mint condition and you're right! They iron them, dry clean them, and need to keep them stain free. I don't know how they do it!

One question i have for you is do you like to watch ASMR videos or mukbang?

    1. Hello Kiara,
When I think back to my middle school years, I loved having free time to be with my friends so I understand.
Don't worry, they have multiple uniforms that they switch out in order to wash the used on. It would be tedious though.
I've never really delved into asmr or been involved in a mukbang broadcast...Have you?
I hear it's really popular in South Korea! Maybe I'll look into it. If I do, I'll let you know :)

    1. South Korea has some really extravagant flower shops! I've never gone in because I hear it's expensive haha They're so pretty to look at though! I recently went to a flower festival and it was really beautiful. I would encourage you to go to the flower festival in Portland like the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival. I think it might be over, but the flower festivals here in South Korea are very similar.

    1. A good education definitely prepares you in many different ways.
If you're interested in trains, look up Seoul's subway map! They are well known for having one of the best public transit systems, able to get you anywhere you need to go.

  36. Hi i am deanna,
I think it's smart to do extra learning so you could have a better education.I do watch asmr sometimes but not a lot. Although i think it's very odd that people eating food is very popular.I think that the food in seoul is very interesting but also look very good. I think that if a student came from seoul to Oregon, i would take them and show them the beautiful sites and food.

    1. Hello Deanna,
I agree with you. Extra studying is good, it's just hard to be motivated to study when you're not required by a class, in my opinion.
What kinds of asmr videos do you like?
Food is such a big thing! I have a friend from Pennsylvania who has visited Portland once before. He said that the food was incredible. We are lucky to live in a foodie city for sure!

  37. Hi my name is Katee and I would not prefer to wear school uniforms because I feel it is important to express your own unique style. I dont think there food is odd because they are just expressing there own culture into the food. I think the kids study a lot but in the end it benefits them in the future. If i went to South Korea i would want to see the food and if a 6th grader came to our school from South Korea i would just show them around.

    1. Hello Katee,
That's a good point. I feel the same way. Middle school is a great time to figure out what you like and where you fit in. Then again, that will always be changing.
You should definitely try the Korean food in Portland. I can't say whether it is the same, but it will definitely be similar. It will give you a literal taste of Korea :D

    1. Hello Austin,
I agree. I wear what I want to wear too. I would recommend trying Korean food. Korean BBQ is expensive in Portland, but if you ever get a chance definitely try it.

    1. It sounds like you would take proper advantage of your time in South Korea! I would suggest showing your foreign friends around to the same types of places (in Portland) that you would want to see in South Korea.
